Our Tail Flick Meter features a radiant heat stimulus applied to the animal's tail. When it feels discomfort, the animal reacts by a tail flick, which automatically stops the timer, recording the animal's reaction time. Our Tail Flick Meter features a radiant heat stimulus applied to the animal's tail. When it feels discomfort, the animal reacts by a tail flick, which automatically stops the timer, recording the animal's reaction time. This test is sensitive for studying analgesic properties of pharmaceuticals and for evaluating basal thermal pain sensitivity.
Our Tail Flick System includes a stimulation unit with halogen lamp and an electronic control unit. The system is suitable for both mice and rats. The animal is placed in a restrainer (please specify species at time of order) with its tail protruding on the platform of the stimulus unit. The animal's tail is positioned in a groove of adjustable width to ensure correct tail placement for the experiment. An included remote footswitch controls start/stop, allowing hands-free rapid testing.
A photo beam with adjustable sensitivity detects the tail flick and the latency is automatically presented on the digital display of the control unit. Measurements of reaction time are giving with a 0.1 precision. A cut-off time can be set to avoid tissue damage (by default this is 20 sec). The groove system for the tail and the adjustment of response sensitivity ensure optimum repeatability and reliability of results. Software is also included for easy data acquisition through an RS-232 connection.
